From Aug. 29-30, 2014, the Twelfth 2014 China Swine Industry Development Conference was launched in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. The conference is co-organized by China Animal Agriculture Association, China Swine Industry Association and National Swine Industry Technology System and Sichuan Animal Husbandry Association. The theme of the conference is Transformation, Environment-friendly, Healthy, and Efficient. The conference is aiming at analyzing the problem facing the industry, discussing the development trend, promoting advanced science and technology achievement, sharing outstanding managerial expertise.
About 500 people including government officials, famous experts, entrepreneurs, media friends attended the conference.
The conference is chaired by Deputy Secretary-General Yin Chengwen of China Animal Agriculture Association.

Secretary-General and Vice President He Xintian delivered the opening speech. He pointed out that, as the biggest producing and consuming pork country, China tops the world on pork production. In 2013, per capita pork reached a record high to 40.74 kg, an increase of 2.51% on a yearly basis. The swine industry make a tremendous contribution to the development of animal husbandry industry, increase of farmer??s revenue and satisfy the increasing demand of both urban and rural people for produce.
Mr. He further expressed that, the recent years has witnessed a series of government support, price hike, rapid growth of swine industry, which brought great change to the production, market and consumption area. It is mainly manifested in the following aspects, firstly, the ratio of standardized and scale farm is increasing; secondly, breeding industry developed stably, which laid a solid foundation for the healthy and sustained development of swine industry; thirdly, food security has been a great concern to the mass, and thus become the basis for the companies to survive and develop; fourthly, frequent fluctuations in the swine price.
Mr. He summarized his speech by emphasizing some of the problems waiting to be solved. Even though the industry made some progress in industry chain, operation concept, industry plan, government support and achieved corresponding success in economic and social returns. First, the industry development structure is needed to be given full consideration. Second, the efficiency of swine breeding is waiting to be improved. Third, disease prevention is required to be strengthened. In this regard, Mr. He called for the whole swine and related people to confront those problems by joining hands together.

On the forum, Wang zongli, Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry Department of MOA made a theme report entitled Historical Background, Merits and Demerits of Swine Policies. Mr. Wang pointed out that the policy frame to support swine industry has basically established with rapid increase of farm scale. The percentage of farm with 500 pigs slaughtered annually has reached to 41%. The construction of fine breed system is steadily developed. The existing problems of swine industry include backward production pattern, lagging pig breed system construction, unsound price control and monitoring system. With the implementation of Livestock and Poultry Pollution Control and Treatment Ordinance, pressure on breeding environment will become bigger and resources constraints tighter. The future path to develop swine industry should follow the principle of combining government guidance with market control, optimize pig farms, accelerate industrial restructuring, strengthen construction of pig reproduction system, intensify science and technology support, and bring the government support policy into full play.

Gong Guifen, Vice Secretary-General of CAAA made a theme report on The Current Situation and Development Trend of Swine Industry in China. Combining the statistics from CAAA, National Bureau of Statistics and MOA, she analyzed the current situation and envisioned the trend of swine industry in China. She pointed out the plunge of live pig price in the early spring of 2013 got a small recovery in April of 2013 and reached a peak even in the off-season. However, the phenomena did not last to the traditional peak season, but showed signs of price declining. In terms of pork to feed ratio, the best year is in 2011, with the index all above 6.6. In 2012, the breeders can only survive while 2013 is a little bit better than 2012. The worst is in 2014, with no month surpassing 6.6. The reason can be as follows, firstly, the economic background has a drastic change; secondly, over-capacity in swine; thirdly, ample supply of pork; fourthly, week consumption. It is estimated that the pig price will follow a downward and then upward trend in 2014 and reached a balancing point in June and July. In the current sluggish market, the inventory of breeding sow will decline for a period if there is no big disease breakout and policy change, but the decline margin will not very big. The pork-to-feed ratio will stop declining when it reaches to 6. She also pointed out that the swine industry has a potential to develop. With intense competition, the concentration of industry will be improved and well-organized cooperative will be a healthy path for the industry to develop.

Participants were actively involved in the discussion and posed their questions on the hot, difficult and focal points to the experts, scientists and speakers. The atmosphere of the conference hall is warm.

Now the swine industry conference has already been held for 12 consecutive years, and it is already become a flagship conference for the industry. We believe the participants will gain a lot from the conference, and then effectively promote the healthy and sustainable development of the swine industry.
